The story takes place in Egypt, where a Nubian princess named Aida has been captured and become a slave to Amneris, who is in line for the throne. Eventually, Aida becomes a friend to Amneris, and falls in love with the princess's betrothed, Radames. Radames loves Aida also but they both must make a difficult choice.
