Dreamgirls
SilentTiger The Broadway play is going to be brought to the big screen. I'd love to see Deb audition for the role of Deena Jones.

SilentTiger A 'Dream' come true for Condon
B'way musical gets a Hollywood makeover

By MICHAEL FLEMING

Bill Condon will direct the movie version of "Dreamgirls," the thinly veiled story of the rise of Diana Ross and the Supremes during the formative years of Motown Records.
The hit Broadway musical about a trio of young black female singers who strive to cross over to the white-dominated pop charts in the early '60s bowed in 1981.

Condon, who won an Oscar for his "Gods And Monsters" screenplay and was Oscar-nominated for his screenplay for "Chicago," has written the first draft of the script.

He has committed to making "Dreamgirls" his directorial follow-up to "Kinsey." Production will begin in late summer or early fall.

javero Deb is Deena!!! I'm so glad this piece is making its way to the big screen under the helm of a notable director. In fact, I always thought that it would be better served as a feature film than yet another Broadway revival. I just have a gut feeling that Deb is on the short list for that part, but am going to research it further in the event a campaign to get her cast is in order. Which studio/filmmaker is producting this film?

(late addition) Silent, everybody over at u-know-where is not sold on Deborah as Deena Jones yet, for a number of reasons. Honestly, one problem that Deb would present in that role is that whoever casted as Effie would have to sing her face off & act like Meryl Streep/Angela Bassett b/c Deb would be bringing heat to her role. I have a sneeking suspicion that this movie is gonna produce one of the biggest "catfights" over casting in a # of years. If it is a huge commericial success as it promises to be, a SUPERSTAR or two or three will be born!

javero Come on Deb. Give us a CD/DVD, mini-tour, and WDFFIL on B-Way in '05, and the feature film 'DREAMGIRLS' in '06. That would be the biggest news of Deb's career.

SilentTiger I've been browsing that board. Those are the same uptights that had something negative to say about Deb's run in AIDA. I hope Deb lands a part in DREAMGIRLS and shuts everyone up.

Rs4STYLE I like it when they make movies of musicals and give the original stars cameos. Hopefully will see glimpses of Loretta Devine, Sheryl Lee Ralph and the fabulous Jennifer Holliday.

javero Silent,
You did not tell me that this was a DREAMWORKS production. This is MAJOR. Dreamgirls, the Movie will be produced by Stephen Spielberg David Geffen, and Jeff Katzenberg under the Dreamworks banner and directed by Bill Condon. It's OSCAR time. Details at http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/050111/latu149_1.html. Deb has got to land that part of Deena. There could be scheduling conflict though now that its been pointed out that production on the movie will start around the same time as rehearsals for the stage musical 'Why Do Fools Fall In Love'. Oh well, it was nice to get caught up in the excitement of it all.

SilentTiger Deb should still go out for a role (either Deena or Lorell).

javero You know what I'm feeling for Deb. Let her drop & promote that CD, fulfill her obligations on Broadway this fall/winter, and land a part in a romantic comedy opposite DON CHEADLE in '06. He probably will be looking for something "lighter" to take on after his BRILLIANT work in 'Hotel Rwanda'. Dreamgirls will either go the way of Chicago (giant smash) or Phantom (giant flop). Every major studio has to be courting Don Cheadle right now so its time to catch that train.
